South Africa houses the deepest mines on earth, most of them long-abandoned. Gangs visit violence upon each other deep underground, while myths speak of cannibals who stalk the forests above. For Fenya, the mines are the last place his father was ever seen. For the “Zama zama”, independent miners who plunge into the depths of the earth in search of riches, the dream of easy wealth is all too alluring.
“Narrated in vibrant, lyrical voiceover, the third film from director Tebogo Malebogo (Mthunzi, NYFF57) traces a transformative encounter between two friends, for whom a shared communion with the natural landscape catalyzes sensual and spiritual awakenings”. - Film At Lincoln Center

“Based on real facts and rooted in the current and past history of South Africa, Mthunzi is a movie under tension, both for the excellent performance of its actors and its impeccable image. Impressive by its strong subject matter − which resonates with our European reality − and important by its unstoppable effectiveness, Tebogo Malebogo’s first film undoubtedly reveals the talent of a promising filmmaker”.
